Holisal and Metrogyl Denta - what is the difference?

How they work and their differences

These drugs have a wide range of effects on diseases:

  • suppress the inflammatory process and swelling, eliminating the feeling of discomfort;
  • nourish the gums with biologically active substances;
  • accelerate the recovery of injured cells;
  • Immunity is significantly increased, increasing the resistance of bacteria, viruses and fungi found in the oral cavity.

This significantly reduces the risk of recurrence of these diseases.

Cholisal is the best option for treating gums. Its spectrum of action is wide: it eliminates painful symptoms, eliminates microbes, relieves inflammation, and has antipyretic properties.

Metrogyl denta is also an antiseptic, but unlike cholisal it acts only on the surface of the gums and it contains much less metronizadol, which has antimicrobial properties.

Ointments for teeth and gums

An indispensable assistant in the work of a dentist is ointments (gels) for teeth and gums. It is various medicinal dental ointments that make it possible to treat and prevent many diseases, such as gingivitis, periodontitis, stomatitis. Ointments relieve pain, ease teething sensations in children, relieve inflammation, relieve bleeding, and strengthen tissues.

Recently, dentists prefer to prescribe gels rather than ointments. This is due to the fact that the ointment has a rather greasy structure, which is why it does not adhere well to the surface of the gums. In addition, medicinal elements penetrate deep into the tissue much more slowly, which slows down treatment.

The gel is absorbed much faster into the tissues of the oral cavity, so the effect of treatment with gels occurs much faster.

Note that many external preparations are usually called one word - ointment. Therefore, when purchasing a product for the prevention and treatment of various oral diseases, you need to carefully look at the name of the drug and its properties. In this article we will use the words “gel” and “ointment” as identical concepts.

When to use

Gels are prescribed for infectious and inflammatory processes occurring in the oral cavity.

Cholisal is used for:

  • periodontal treatment;
  • swelling of gums under dentures;
  • inflammatory processes when using braces;
  • for the treatment of stomatitis;
  • inflammation of the wisdom tooth.

The drug is also available in children's form, which is used as a pain reliever during teething.

Metrogyl is used to treat:

  • chronic periodontitis;
  • cheilitis;
  • oral mucosa;
  • acute and chronic gingivitis;
  • aphthous stomatitis;
  • inflammation of wisdom teeth;
  • periodontal abscess;
  • inflammation when using prostheses.

It follows that these drugs are interchangeable, since they treat almost the same diseases. Except for cases associated with teething, it is prohibited to use Metragyl denta.

For the treatment of stomatitis

Which is better Cholisal or Metrogyl Denta

These drugs are available in gel form. The spectrum of action is practically no different from each other. Due to the components that make up these dental products, they have their differences.

Cholisal has a wider range of effects. It not only destroys bacteria, but also fights fungi and viruses. This gel has an anti-inflammatory property, which facilitates the ongoing treatment.

Also, the superiority of this medicine is that it has an anesthetic property, which helps reduce pain in the patient, as well as in children during teething. The effect of anesthesia reaches eight hours.
In addition, a significant advantage is the use of the gel by women during pregnancy in the first three months, as well as by nursing mothers.

Indications for use

The full list of indications for Metrogyl Denta gel from the instructions for use is as follows: - acute/chronic gingivitis; - Vincent's gingivitis; - acute/chronic, as well as juvenile periodontitis; - periodontal disease; - cheilitis; - aphthous stomatitis; - inflammation of the mucous membrane due to dentures; - alveolitis; - periodontitis.

Contraindications

Contraindications in the instructions for use include individual intolerance to metronidazole and chlorhexidine, as well as all derivatives of nitroimidazole. Also, it should not be used by a child if he is under 6 years old. Prohibited if you are intolerant to any of the components in the composition. Side effects include headache and allergies.

pharmachologic effect

These drugs are part of a pharmacological group with antimicrobial properties. Gels also have a bactericidal effect.

Cholisal is a dental gel for local use with an antiseptic effect. When used, it is instantly absorbed into the wall of the oral cavity, which provides local anesthesia, relieves inflammation and heat. In an alkaline environment it performs antimicrobial and antifungal functions. Fungi lose their ability to reproduce and simply die.

Metrogyl is an antimicrobial gel, the effectiveness of which is dependent on the presence of two components:

  • metronidazole has antiprotozoal and antibacterial effects;
  • chlorhexidine disinfects without reducing its properties in the presence of blood and pus.

Metrogyl is practically not absorbed into the lining of the oral cavity, without disturbing the functional intensity of lactobacilli.

Reviews from doctors about Cholisal and Metrogil

Orlovsky V.F., orthodontist, 34 years old, Novosibirsk

If the oral mucosa is damaged, stomatitis may occur. The anti-inflammatory components of these dental gels provide a healing effect and stimulate tissue regeneration. Apply to the damaged area using a cotton swab.

Nikiforova O. V., dentist, 54 years old, Tomsk

Good drugs that can be used at home to treat minor injuries to the oral mucosa. In the presence of deep inflammation, they can cause harm: the damage will heal on the outside, but the source of inflammation will remain inside. This can lead to various complications and tooth loss. Therefore, it is better to consult a doctor before use.

The choice of a particular drug is determined by the type of pathological process and the severity of the manifestations of the disease.

Composition and release form

Cholisal is a colorless transparent gel which contains: choline salicylate and cetalkonium chloride. Excipients: methyl parahydroxybenzonate, glycerol, ethanol, hyaetellose, anise seed oil, water. The gel is well absorbed into the oral cavity, is well tolerated by patients, and does not contain sugar.

Packaged in an aluminum tube with a cap made of polymer material, 10, 15 g each. One piece in a cardboard box.

Metrogyl denta is a gel-like opalescent preparation of white or almost white color. It contains: metronizadol benzoate and chlorhexidine bigluconate.

Excipients:

  • propylene glycol;
  • disodium edate;
  • levomenthol;
  • water;
  • carbomer, sodium saccharinate, sodium hydroxide.

These drugs can be purchased without a doctor's prescription. The shelf life allows them to be stored for three years, at a temperature not exceeding 25 degrees.

In what cases are they used?

Local gels and ointments are prescribed for inflammatory or infectious processes in the oral cavity, which are caused by various reasons: teething in infants, stomatitis, gingivitis, periodontitis, inflammation of the gums from dentures and much more.
Depending on the disease, the dentist selects a course of treatment, including special medications for direct impact on the inflamed areas.

Cholisal and Metrogyl Denta are often interchangeable, but differ in composition and effect, as well as in contraindications.

Only a specialist can correctly diagnose and prescribe a drug; instructions for medications are for informational purposes only. Self-medication can worsen the condition and cause harm to health.

Instructions for use

The drugs are used for dental diseases at each stage of inflammation occurring in the oral cavity. Thanks to the components included in these gels, they help eliminate the inflammatory process.

Also, these drugs do not interact with other drugs.

Indications

Metrogyl denta is prescribed for advanced forms of inflammation, accompanied by purulent discharge and bleeding gums. Thanks to the antibiotic included in the gel, this drug effectively fights microbes, unlike Halisal.

Contraindications

Mode of application

Treatment with Cholisal as an anesthetic is carried out 2 - 3 times a day before or after meals, it can be used before bedtime . The gel is squeezed onto a disinfected finger, 1 cm long for adults, and 0.5 cm long for children, and rubbed into the affected area of the mouth with light massaging movements.

The dosage of the gel for adults should be 10 mg, and for children – 5 mg. The duration of use is prescribed by the doctor depending on the stage of the disease. Typically this period lasts 7-10 days.

If you have gingitis, you must first remove the tartar - this is done by your dentist. Then, two to three times a day, after cleansing the teeth with toothpaste and rinsing with an antiseptic, the gel is applied. In this case, it is forbidden to eat for about one hour. Treatment usually lasts for 10 days.

Unlike the above disease, stomatitis is not treated with any of the gels, but is only used as an additional remedy, as an antibacterial and analgesic.

Solcoseryl - gel for gums: method of application, properties, price

Solcoseryl differs from other dental gels in its pronounced medicinal effect: the drug contains calf blood dialysate.

The gel is used in this way:

  1. Clean the mouth and dry it.
  2. Apply Solcoseryl to the gums in a thin layer.
  3. Sprinkle the gel with water.

Treatment lasts until the disturbing symptoms disappear completely. 3-5 procedures per day are enough: after each meal and at night.

The use of the gel will allow:

  • accelerate the healing of wounds in the mouth;
  • quickly block painful sensations for 3-5 hours;
  • protect gums from chemical and mechanical injuries for 3-5 hours after applying Solcoseryl.

The estimated cost of the drug is 340 rubles. in 5 years

special instructions

If side effects occur, you should immediately consult a doctor. Also, drugs are used exclusively for medicinal purposes and only externally. The gels do not have a hypnotic effect and do not reduce a person’s activity or driving ability.

Metrogyl denta has toxic properties, so it is rarely prescribed to children. If this drug is swallowed carelessly, it may cause digestive problems.

If you feel discomfort, you should not self-medicate; this will not lead to anything good, but will only delay treatment for a longer period. Without a correct diagnosis, therapy may not be started; time and money will be wasted.

If visiting a doctor is not possible due to some reason, strictly adhere to the instructions, taking into account contraindications. If the instructions do not contain a declared disease, then its use is pointless.

Having some knowledge, you can understand that in some cases Cholisal can be replaced with Metrogyl denta. Such a replacement is due to the rather high cost of the first one, but the effectiveness of treatment will not be affected.

The price of these gels is not a decisive factor when purchasing a medicine. If it is not cheap, this does not mean at all that it should heal quickly and efficiently.

Choosing the right ointment for gum inflammation

Typically, gum ointments are used to get rid of pain caused by various reasons, relieve inflammation and heal the gums after surgery or before visiting a doctor.

The obvious advantage of gels and ointments for gums against inflammation is accessibility, direct contact with the affected area and, accordingly, high efficiency. The main thing is to choose the right ointment depending on the problem that caused the pain and other unpleasant sensations.

Important! Dentists recommend choosing water-based gels rather than ointments. They are absorbed faster, the active substance appears in the gum tissue faster.

I had a bad experience with Metrogil Denta. But Holisal helped!

Welcome to my review!

Recently I started noticing blood while brushing my teeth. I tried a bunch of specialized pastes, but the effect was either temporary or completely absent. But it’s scary to watch teeth falling into the sink on the TV screen with the hint that bleeding gums lead to serious consequences.

Background:

I had never suffered from the problem of bleeding before, I sometimes noticed blood in toothpaste, which was rare and I did not attach much importance to it. But in the last 2-3 months this has become a pattern. After another visit to the dentist, Metrogyl Denta was prescribed, because... I also touched my gum while brushing a tooth and it became inflamed. What could have triggered the sensitivity remained unclear to me; nothing meaningful was said. The dental gel turned out to be ineffective; in the end, oak bark helped me stop the gum inflammation.

And not so long ago I came across reviews about Holisal. Of course, there were doubts about its effectiveness. But I decided to try. After all, you can’t sit idly by in such a situation?

Cholisal itself is transparent in color with a rather viscous consistency. The taste is not unpleasant, pleasant. The smell is not very pronounced. According to the manufacturer, it smells like anise oil.

Application:

I bought two tubes because... its volume is small. At the very beginning of use, I thoroughly lubricated my gums with it at night, rubbing it in. There was no burning sensation, only a slight tingling sensation was felt after application. Then numbness, because the drug has an anesthetic effect. I would like to note that I do not have heartburn, as with Metrogil Dent. The gel itself, when squeezed out of the tube, stretches “like saliva”, the consistency is quite peculiar.

Result:

After just two days of “rubbing in” Cholisal at night, I began to notice while brushing my teeth that the paste was white and there was no blood. After cleaning, the gums themselves no longer look reddened as before. I have been using the gel for a week, applying it in smaller quantities so that there is no withdrawal syndrome. I will gradually reduce my use to consolidate the results.

Pay attention to contraindications:

- hypersensitivity to salicylates and other components of the drug.

– the drug should be used with caution during pregnancy, during breastfeeding and in children under 1 year of age.

Let's summarize:

In my case, Cholisal turned out to be an effective drug that relieves inflammatory processes. The bleeding has gone away and I can brush my teeth again as before, without fear of touching or injuring my gums with a toothbrush.

My little niece recently started teething. Her mother and I have probably tried all the remedies (my sister sits at home with her daughter, and I’m on hand if anything happens, if anything happens, I go to the first aid kit or store at full speed). In short, we tried all the gels that were only sold in pharmacies. Holisal helped us. Firstly, on the same day. And secondly, we now constantly use it for prevention purposes and now we don’t wait for the next tooth to come out to hurt or not, we apply it regularly and don’t know the torment)).

I decided to try it on myself, I smeared it gum - a strong burning sensation began, almost to the point of tears! Side effect on all family members? Fake? I won’t use this gel again, the burns are terrible, the pain is terrible. But the blood still remained.

Side effects and contraindications

Cholisal should not be used:

  • In case of hypersensitivity to one of the components.
  • During pregnancy.
  • Children should be given the drug only after consulting a doctor.

At the first signs of an allergy to Cholisal, the composition must be washed off and consult a doctor. Slight burning sensation

, for 40 seconds, is not a side effect. And some people, judging by the reviews, perceive this as a manifestation of an allergic reaction. The use of the composition together with painkillers, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory drugs enhances their effect. Side effects from the drug may occur due to its long-term use or exceeding the dosage. You must carefully study the instructions before use.

Analogues of Cholisal according to the active substance

The active components of Cholisal are:

  • choline salicylate – relieves pain, reduces inflammation, fever;
  • Cetalkonium chloride is an antiseptic.

There are 2 more products with the same components - Mundizal and Pansoral. Both drugs are available in gel form; the list of indications includes conditions and diseases similar to Cholisal. Let's take a closer look.

Mundizal gel

Mundizal is produced by the Austrian pharmaceutical company Mundipharma. Due to the choline salicylate included in the composition, Mundizal has an anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect at the site of application of the gel. Literally a couple of minutes after application, the patient feels a significant reduction in pain.

Mundizal is a less popular drug than Cholisal.

The drug entered the market not so long ago and is not yet as popular as Cholisal. The gel is produced in tubes of 8 grams, that is, the volume is almost half that of the Cholisal gel. But the prices for the drugs are almost the same, so Mundizal cannot be considered as a cheaper analogue. Its purchase is advisable only if Cholisal is not available in the pharmacy and there is a need to buy the medicine as quickly as possible. The cost of a 15 gram tube of Cholisal is about 450 rubles, Mundizal will cost about 380 rubles.

An analogue of Cholisal dental gel with a more affordable price is a drug under the trade name Pansoral. The medicine is produced by the French company Pierre Fabre Medicament. A 15 gram package of Pansoral gel costs about 280 rubles.

Cholisal oral gel is not recommended for use by children under one year of age. This is due to the anise oil included in the composition. It increases saliva production, which can cause discomfort in the baby. Pansoral, unlike Cholisal, can be used for infants. Auxiliary components of the drug are chamomile extract, marshmallow, saffron, Irish moss. It can be used when the baby reaches 4 months of age; many children begin to experience symptoms during this period.

Pansoral is an analogue of Cholisal in terms of the active substance.

Pansoral gel has a sweetish taste, so children readily agree to use it. Sodium saccharin is included as a sweetener; sweeteners are produced on the basis of this substance.

Similar to Cholisal for gums, Pansoral is used exclusively topically. It is applied to damaged mucous membranes or swollen gums before pecking a tooth. You cannot use the gel more than 4 times a day.

Review of the best drugs

The best dental medications for stomatitis are described below. Let's take a closer look at each of them.

Solcoseryl

The drug is a gel for stomatitis and superficial lesions with a pronounced regeneration effect. Solcoseryl for stomatitis is able to normalize the nutrition of cells in the affected tissues and relieve pain.

It is produced from the blood of calves, which explains the regenerative properties of the medicine. If the stage of stomatitis is more severe with extensive ulcerative formations, the gel ensures rapid necrosis of the destroyed areas, drying and scarring of the tissue.

Since the active component of the Solcoseryl gel is of animal origin, the list of contraindications is very short. These include the presence of an allergic reaction to the components of the composition, as well as pregnancy in the first trimester.

Solcoseryl can help both children and adult patients.

Holisal

In the case of the initial stage of development of stomatitis, the disease can be cured with the help of Cholisal gel. The drug is able to reduce and eliminate the inflammatory process, as well as eliminate pain. Before using this gel, you must rinse your mouth using an antiseptic solution.

The medicine is suitable for both children and adults, as it has a sweet taste and no odor. Use is permitted from one year of age. 2-3 minutes after application, the pain subsides and the patient feels much better. Read more about the use of Cholisal gel for stomatitis here.

Cholisal is not prescribed in combination with antipyretics, as it enhances their effect.

Among the positive properties of Cholisal are:

  • antipyretic effect;
  • effective elimination of all inflammatory processes;
  • eliminating itching;
  • anesthetic effect;
  • tissue regeneration in affected areas.
