Why is sodium tetraborate used in medicine?

Sodium tetraborate is used in industry to create enamels, glazes, in veterinary medicine, and in medicine. In food production, the substance was previously used as a food additive, its name is E285.

Currently, this additive is not used as a preservative. The toxicity of E285 is quite small, but it can accumulate in the body, which leads to all sorts of consequences.

The drug is also used during disinfestation to kill cockroaches.

In addition, they are used in medicine:

  • for diaper rash;
  • stomatitis, periodontal disease;
  • bedsores;
  • candidiasis, vulvovaginitis;
  • tonsillitis, pharyngitis, sore throat;
  • skin lesions by microbes, pyorrhea, colpitis;
  • with staphylococcal pyoderma.

Sodium tetraborate is used only externally; it should never be swallowed.
Another medicine may be called “borax in glycerin.”

Compound

The medicine contains 20 percent borax or sodium tetraborate, and an 80 percent glycerin solution is also added. This is a fungicidal composition that has an antiseptic effect. Borax is made by mixing sodium and boric acid.

Borax is highly soluble in glycerin. In addition, glycerin moisturizes the mucous membrane. Therefore, the medicine reaches the affected areas of the skin much faster.

Glycerin also makes the solution thicker, it is easier to lubricate the mucous membrane, and it remains on it much longer.

The medicine is transparent, with a specific odor. It tastes a little sweet.

Effect on the body

The medicine temporarily stops the further proliferation of dangerous bacteria. It destroys putrefactive bacteria and prevents decomposition.

The drug destroys the mycelium of the pathogenic fungus in the vagina, prevents the Candida fungus from attaching to the walls of the vagina and stops its active reproduction.

True, it does not slow down the growth of fungi and does not eliminate them completely, which is why the composition is not classified as an antifungal drug.

It does not immediately eliminate Candida fungi, but creates intolerable conditions for the development of candidiasis. Due to such effects, it treats thrush.

It is not considered an etiotropic agent, since it does not have a fungistatic (does not stop the growth of the fungus) or fungicidal effect (does not completely eliminate the fungus).

The medicine can accumulate in the liver and bone tissue.

Sodium tetraborate is part of Teymurov's paste, which destroys fungi and bacteria, dries and deodorizes the skin; it is used for excessive sweating, rosacea, hyperhidrosis, and eczema.

True, the paste contains many more components, boric and salicylic acids, glycerin, formaldehyde, lead, zinc, mint essential oil.

The medication is also included in Anarod-anfar-3 and Asmur, in Mirant, which are also used for bedsores, tonsillitis, candidiasis of the urinary tract and vagina, oral cavity, and pharynx.

Pharmacology

Effective for vaginal candidiasis. Removes the mycelium of the fungus from the vaginal crypts, disrupts the process of attachment of the fungus to the vaginal wall and inhibits its reproduction. It is not an etiotropic agent, because does not have a fungicidal or fungistatic effect. As an antimicrobial agent it is part of combination drugs (bicarmint) for the treatment of inflammatory diseases of the upper respiratory tract.

Absorbed into the gastrointestinal tract through damaged skin. It is excreted unchanged by the kidneys and through the intestines within a week. Deposited in bone tissue and liver.

In the food industry it is approved for use as a food additive, registered as E285. It has insecticidal properties (class 4 toxicity level). The main area of application is the destruction of cockroaches. Approved for sale to the public and use in medical pest control practice.

Application

Local indication for use: it is applied only to the mucous membranes and skin. The medication is absorbed by the skin and mucous membranes, and then moves into the esophagus.

The medicine is excreted by the kidneys and intestines about a week after its use.

Indications for use

Sodium tetraborate is used in the following cases:

  • in gynecology, treats vaginal diseases - thrush, colpitis;
  • lubricate the skin in case of necrosis of its tissues - bedsores;
  • for skin diseases of non-infectious origin - diaper rash;
  • apply it to the skin for staphylococcal pyoderma (inflammatory skin disease):
  • used by lubricating inflamed tonsils with tonsillitis;
  • with inflammation of the pharyngeal mucosa - pharyngitis;
  • with inflammation of the oral mucosa - stomatitis;
  • with inflammation of the gums - pyorrhea;
  • for gum disease – gingivitis;
  • with inflammation of the tissues that hold the teeth - periodontal disease.

Instructions for use

Lubricate the skin with the medicine, syringe the vagina, rinse the mouth, do this twice or thrice a day.

Let's consider the use for various diseases:

  • For stomatitis and diseases of the ENT organs, they rinse the mouth with it, but under no circumstances swallow it. For skin diseases, it is applied and rubbed into the skin. Do not use the medication for more than a week.
  • If candidiasis of the oral mucosa is detected , then rinse the mouth twice or thrice a day. This is done for 3-7 days as prescribed by the attending physician, when he will examine and evaluate the patient’s condition.
  • If a doctor discovers candidiasis in a woman and advises her to use medication, then before using the medicine, she needs to syringe the vagina with herbal decoctions or boiled water. Then the borax solution is poured onto a gauze tampon and inserted into the vagina for half an hour. If the symptoms of thrush are mild, then this is done once a day. For chronic thrush (candidiasis) and clearly visible symptoms, use the medicine 2 times a day. Once you remove the tampon from your vagina, do not wash your face for a while. For thrush treatment to be effective, use neutral soap to wash your face.
  • If the doctor has prescribed lubricating the tonsils for tonsillitis , then this is done 4-6 times a day. Such procedures last for a week. For better effectiveness, you can gargle with a saline solution of the medication. It is prepared independently. Pour 1 teaspoon of salt into a glass of boiled water, add a few drops of sodium tetrabotate, mix well and gargle.

Dosage

Borax solution in the amount of 1 tbsp. spoons are poured into 250 liters of water to rinse the mouth. For douching, dissolve 4-5 tablets in 1 liter of clean water.

Overdose

It must be remembered that when taking the medicine orally, the dose leading to death in an adult is 10–20 g, the toxic concentration in the bloodstream is 40 mg/l, and the concentration in the circulatory system is 50 mg/l leading to death.

In case of overdose, symptoms may occur:

  • the patient is absent-minded, his consciousness is confused;
  • women may experience irregular periods;
  • the patient feels general weakness;
  • dermatitis appears on the skin;
  • sometimes children and adults experience hair loss;
  • vomiting, severe abdominal pain, diarrhea occurs;
  • migraine;
  • fainting, dehydration;
  • convulsions, twitching of facial and leg muscles;
  • the activity of the liver and kidneys is impaired;
  • diseases of the heart and blood vessels appear.

In case of overdose, the stomach must be rinsed immediately. Carry out a method of quickly removing toxic toxins from the body by increasing the volume of urine. In case of serious poisoning, the blood should be purified and hemodialysis performed.

The doctor prescribes riboflavin mononucleotide injections intravenously at 10 mg/day.

In addition, he may prescribe intravenous sodium bicarbonate solution in order to correct acidosis (acid-base balance) and water-electrolyte balance.

If the patient has a stomach ache, then he is prescribed a subcutaneous injection of 1 ml of a 0.1% atropine solution, 1 mg of a 1% promedol solution, 1 ml of a 0.2% platyphylline solution and an intravenous injection of a glucose-novocaine mixture, that is, 500 ml of 5% glucose solution and 50 ml of 2% novocaine solution.

In addition, the doctor prescribes the patient to take medications to maintain normal cardiovascular activity: Anaprilin, Nitroglycerin, Nerobol .

Use for children

The medication is used to treat infants, children and adolescents only as prescribed by a pediatrician, since borax is highly toxic and can cause poisoning of the body.

According to the instructions, the medicine should not be used by children under 3 years of age.

For sore throat

If a sore throat was not recognized at first, then there are similar symptoms:

  • the child has a serious sore throat when swallowing;
  • there is a very unpleasant odor from the mouth;
  • lymph nodes under the jaw swell;
  • temperature increases to 38-40 °C;
  • the voice becomes hoarse, hoarse;
  • pimply white blisters are visible on the tonsils.

Sore throat in children is treated only after visiting an ENT specialist or pediatrician. The doctor prescribes antifungal compounds, vitamins, and fever-lowering medications for the child.

Before using sodium tetraborate, the child should rinse his mouth with clean lukewarm water or chamomile decoction, then it will clear the mucous membrane of plaque. Next, use a swab dipped in the medicine to treat the pharynx.

After this, it is not recommended for 30 minutes. eat or drink so that sodium tetraborate has the required antimicrobial effect.

For stomatitis

Stomatitis appears quite often in children. Since the mucous membrane is very delicate, and the immune system has not yet strengthened.

Symptoms:

  • the child becomes restless, cries, is capricious, does not eat anything;
  • bubbles form in the mouth, on the cheeks and tongue, then they burst and ulcers appear;
  • usually the temperature is normal.

As a rule, for children who have stomatitis, the doctor prescribes treating the oral mucosa with medicine 3 times a day for 3-4 days.

To treat, wrap a bandage around your index finger, dip it in the medicine, and lubricate the child’s mouth with it.

In addition, the pediatrician prescribes gargling with a solution of the medicine and water with salt. Pour 1 tbsp into a glass of clean boiled water. a spoonful of salt, and then pour in half a teaspoon of sodium tetraborate. Rinse your mouth twice a day.

Parents must ensure that the child spits out all the solution and does not swallow it. Glycerin envelops the skin, the pain disappears, and so does stomatitis.

For thrush

Thrush can appear quite often in children. This occurs because the fungus enters the newborn's body as it passes through the birth canal.

Also, the risk of candidiasis increases when the immune system is weakened: during ARVI, when the child is teething, when the doctor prescribes antibiotics to the baby.

Symptoms:

  • The child is very restless, he does not eat anything;
  • The mouth, lips, cheeks and tongue are covered with a gray coating similar to cottage cheese.

After the pediatrician prescribes the medicine, you should prepare: a soda solution, a bandage, and the medicine itself. Wash your hands thoroughly with water and baby soap, dry them, and wrap your index finger with a bandage.

First, treat the areas with gray plaque with a soda solution, and then dip your index finger with a wound bandage in sodium tetraborate and wipe the affected areas of the child with the medicine, most importantly, clean off the plaque.

Side effects in children

The following side effects occur:

  • irritation appears at the treatment site;
  • the treated skin itches;
  • the child feels weak, faints, or has convulsions;
  • dermatitis and anemia appear.

If, after using the composition, you notice one of these side effects, then immediately stop treatment and visit your child’s treating pediatrician.

Scope of application of the drill

Sodium tetraborate has been actively used for the following purposes:

  • as a flux during soldering and melting of metals;
  • in analytical chemistry studies as a standard substance for determining the level of acid in a solution. Borax is also used to establish the characteristics of metal oxides;
  • widespread use in the creation of glazes, enamel, glasses for optical instruments and decoration;
  • the powder is used in pharmaceuticals and paper production;
  • is a natural preservative and means for disinfection and control of parasites;
  • is a component in the chemical industry to create household cleaning products;
  • relevant application in the creation of cosmetic products;
  • borax is used as a base for creating boron;
  • the substance is a component for creating insulating building materials;
  • in light industry, sodium tetraborate is applied to the product before the painting procedure.

Using a drill in everyday life

Borax can be found in most grocery stores. It is a relatively inexpensive product, making it an excellent choice for many household projects.

Sodium tetraborate physicochemical properties

Use of sodium tetraborate as a medicine

The substance is very effective in controlling pests: cockroaches, ants and other household insects. The mixture is ready by mixing equal parts of powder with sugar. Sugar helps attract beetles and borax exerts its detrimental effect on the insect. It is recommended to keep the substance in hard-to-reach places, away from pets and children. Optimal places: under stoves, refrigerator and sink. Borax also works well against mice. You just have to apply the powder in the areas where the mice are located, and the borax will rid you of the pests. You can also sprinkle the solution on the carpet and vacuum it to eliminate the presence of fleas or treat the mattress to get rid of bedbugs.

Borax will get rid of rust. Mixing 1 cup of powder with 2 cups of water and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice makes an effective anti-corrosion agent. The paste-like solution is applied to the rusty items for about 15 minutes. After which the rust can be easily removed by mechanical friction.

Sodium tetraborate is a universal cleaner. Two tablespoons of borax are mixed with 2 cups of water to create an all-purpose cleaner. The solution can be applied in a spray bottle and used to clean kitchen surfaces and bathroom tiles and ceramics. Borax is great for removing very stubborn stains. Borax will help remove stubborn stains from the floor.

Borax will allow you to flush your home plumbing fixtures. Simply place ½ cup of borax into the drain with a few cups of warm water. Borax breaks down dirt that gets stuck in pipes. This will not only remove excess and unclog the drain, but also disinfect the system.

Application in forging and forge welding

Borax is actively used as a flux for forging and forge welding. The powder is a source of boron oxide, with excellent antioxidant properties. Borax can, if necessary, remove small cracks during metal processing, change the shape of a product, or when heated during artistic forging and blacksmithing of metal. The substance is classified as a high temperature flux. The processed workpiece with borax is characterized by more wear-resistant characteristics and durability.

Sodium tetraborate physicochemical properties

Using borax in soldering

During the melting of borax at a temperature of 700-900 °C, the surface of the material being processed is cleaned, and all excess inclusions are dissolved in the flux. During the processing of a material by forging, a thick layer of scale is gradually created. In some cases, the metal being processed may completely burn due to overheating of the part. But by using a thin layer of borax, this scenario can be avoided.

Use for pregnant and lactating women

If a woman is pregnant, she very often gets candidiasis.

This is due to a strong decrease in immunity during pregnancy, as well as due to the resistance of fungi of the genus Candida to many drugs. Candidiasis appears from new pads, soap, and the use of antibiotics.

And if you buy suppositories, tablets, ointments at the pharmacy, all this is quite expensive and has side effects. Thrush causes very unpleasant sensations, there is discharge, burning, and itching of the skin.

And during pregnancy, even suppositories cannot be inserted, in addition to Pimafucin, but it does not cure.

Can the medicine be used during pregnancy?

When treating the vagina with medication, Candida fungi are mechanically removed from the vagina.

The medicine has an effect on fungi, it deprives them of the ability to attach to the walls of the vagina.

Because of this, the fungus stops multiplying and subsequently disappears completely.

Often, in addition to candidiasis, a woman has other sexually transmitted infections.

A boron-based medicine destroys many harmful microorganisms and normalizes the balance of microflora in the vagina. Because of this, all the symptoms of candidiasis disappear.

Since the medicine is considered toxic in certain doses, it is therefore used very carefully, under the full supervision of a doctor. It is best to use a 5% solution, strictly following the written instructions.

Do not use this medicine if you have previously had hypersensitivity reactions to this medicine or others that are similar to this medicine.

During pregnancy, the medicine is used only after visiting the attending physician; he usually prescribes the drug in the early stages of pregnancy.

If your doctor has prescribed you to use the medicine during lactation, do not breastfeed your baby while using sodium tetrabotarate.

It is not recommended to lubricate damaged epithelium with the medicine, as the composition can penetrate into the bloodstream, and this will increase the risk of overdose.

When treating candidiasis, you should not use the medicine for cracks in the epithelium or chemical burns.

Whether it is safe to use the drug during pregnancy is entirely up to the attending physician; for example, if there is a threat of miscarriage, cervical insufficiency and many similar diseases, the doctor will prohibit the use of the drug.

Features of the soldering process

There are various soldering options. Many of them have a similar operating algorithm.

Sodium tetraborate physicochemical properties

Submerged Soldering

For a quality connection, the following steps are necessary:

  1. The solder must be applied to a clean surface that acts as a base. It is necessary to remove any oils, paints, waxes and other impurities using a solvent, steel brush, or fine sandpaper.
  2. In order for the solder to connect to the tip of the soldering iron, heat it up for a few seconds, and only then apply the solder. Hold the soldering iron like a handle, near the base of the tool.
  3. Both parts of the workpiece that will be soldered must be hot to form a good bond.
  4. The tip of the soldering iron heats both sides of the workpieces.
  5. The solder will not flow well on the heated base metal. Enough solder should be used to form a strong connection.
  6. Remove the tip from the joint area as soon as the solder begins to flow.
  7. Do not move the solder joint while the solder is cooling. Do not overheat the connection as this may cause damage. Transistors and some other components may be damaged due to the heat of soldering. The alligator clip can be used as a heat sink to protect these components. By absorbing heat, the alligator clip reduces heat, helping prevent damage.
  8. Soldering a connection can only take a few seconds, and even an amateur can perform the operation. If the seam looks bad, reheat it and try again. Bad bonds (also called dry bonds) must be melted and remade. Wipe the tip of the soldering iron to clean it. Unplug the soldering iron when not in use.
