Philips Sonicare DiamondClean ultrasonic toothbrush – pros and cons, price

In the field of dentistry today, a wide selection of toothbrushes has been developed.
If you want to buy it, its functionality and cost are important to us. It’s clear that we choose between mechanical or electric brushes. Savings are not entirely appropriate in this case. A motorized brush already has advantages, despite its primitiveness. The only necessary use of a mechanical brush in our rapidly changing world is a hike, with the necessary saving of space in a backpack, calculating the weight of luggage and not being dependent on an outlet.

The Philips brand is one of the main manufacturers in the world of electric toothbrushes. The organization has a huge assortment - there are economy models and ultra-expensive brushes to choose from. The Philips Sonicare DiamondClean sonic toothbrush kit consists of: the brush itself, a case, a charger for the case, a charger with a glass, a pair of replacement heads, caps, instructions and a warranty card.

Kinds

One of the characteristics on the basis of which standard toothbrushes can be divided is the degree of softness. Models with the highest level of softness are considered by experts to be the most optimal option for children under 5 years of age. One of these is the Philips sonicare children's toothbrush. Even people with very sensitive teeth can use it.

Medium-hard brushes are the best option for most users, because not only children over 5 years old, but also adults can use them for oral care. However, please note that you can use a hard brush to care for your teeth only on the recommendation of a doctor. Otherwise, such an initiative can lead to serious injuries to the gums and teeth.

Modern dental care accessories often have a number of specialized additions such as rubber inserts, bristles of various lengths, and bendable heads. Experts have different views on such products. Consumers need to remember that such brushes are much more expensive than regular ones. It follows from this that regularly replacing them will require quite a lot of expense.

Electric toothbrushes

Domestic consumers became acquainted with these brushes many years ago. There are several key elements in their design:

  • battery compartment;
  • a cleaning head capable of rotating alternately in both directions;
  • control board.

One of the features of the brush is that it can make many more revolutions than the human hand. This means that it can clean your teeth better than a regular brush. Such devices are offered with a specific set of attachments, with which you can effectively clean different areas of the oral cavity.

If you need Philips sonicare toothbrush heads, you will need to purchase them separately for your teeth, cheeks, and tongue. To save money, you can buy one device for your family. Then all you have to do is purchase a separate nozzle for each family member.

Sonic and ultrasonic brushes

Such devices are a new stage in the improvement of toothbrushes, in which more and more users are showing interest. Ultrasonic devices attract attention because the bristles used in them vibrate at a frequency of 1.6 MHz.

Thanks to such a high index, it is not difficult for the bristles to penetrate the space between the gum and tooth to a depth of about 3-4 mm. Due to this, it is possible to remove tartar located on the invisible part of the tooth without any problems. But it is known that it is precisely because of this deposit that cervical caries most often occurs. As a result of vibration of the head, plaque turns into a foamy mass, which means a complete disruption of the connection between it and the tooth.

Ultrasound is known to be very effective in combating many types of pathogens. But in comparison with it, the method of cleaning with an electric brush provides better quality, as can be judged by numerous consumer reviews. An important feature of the Philips sonicare toothbrush is that it does not require the purchase of toothpaste.

Philips sonicare attachment compatibility

Equipment

When you get ready to pick up your purchase from a store or delivery point, don’t be alarmed: a toothbrush box fits more like a small teapot. But it’s immediately clear what exactly was purchased: right on the box we found the package, a short guide to use, and even help for the mobile application.

Having opened the box, inside we found:

  • electric toothbrush
  • 4 replaceable attachments
  • travel case
  • charger with glass
  • instructions and supplements to it
  • brochure for getting started with the brush quickly
  • warranty card

As we can see, a lot of all sorts of goodness fits inside the box, but it is tightly packed in a special trough for greater safety. The attachments are stored in a sealed bag, which protects them from contamination.

Since the supply varies from model to model, in our case we will have to do without a case for storing attachments. This is not a very convenient solution: the attachments immediately begin to wander throughout the bathroom, fall and get lost. A little trick: put the two you're not currently using in a travel container.

Other configurations may not have a travel case or may have a different composition of attachments. This is specifically stated in the instructions.

At first sight

This model is designed in white, which seems good - it’s a symbol of cleanliness and whiteness of teeth after use. Stylish and sterile - and toothpaste drips will not be so obvious. But it would still be a good idea to carefully wipe the brush after each use. And the white travel container, although it looks very nice, seems impractical. But it is extremely pleasant to the touch due to the soft touch coating.

The white body of the brush is also not very good because the backlight of almost all the indicators on it is also white. When charging, for example, distinguishing a blinking white light on a white case in bright light through the charging glass is quite a task. You can find out what color the indicators are right away: the brush in the box is already charged, and if you pick it up, all the indicators will light up.

The toothbrush itself is quite massive, but it fits very comfortably in the hand. So to speak, you pick it up and wave the thing. It has two buttons on the body: turning on and switching modes. Below the power button there is a power level sensor and a general list of modes - and no icons are used for it. Those who do not know English will have to use a dictionary.

At first glance, the purpose of the heavy glass glass lying in the box seems obvious - they took care of the user, gave him a beautiful container for rinsing his mouth. But then - intrigue! - everything turns out to be not so simple at all.

Instructions

In the box we found a user manual in 16 languages, an addendum to this manual and a welcome leaflet for a quick introduction to the purchase options (it contains the most valuable information).

The accompanying documentation comprehensively introduces us to all the capabilities of the toothbrush, however, some information regarding a specific model is included in the welcome brochure or in addition to the manual. It is clear that this is caused by the need to print one guide for several models, but such savings will force the user to store three rather different booklets, one of which is quite voluminous (due to the abundance of languages into which it is translated).

The documentation is translated almost flawlessly, there are no ambiguities in it (if you know where to look for what). It describes in detail all the modes of brushing your teeth, the rules for caring for your brush, and there are also standard warnings and tips for using electrical appliances.

There is enough information about the application to install it and connect the toothbrush to your smartphone. The rest will be described in detail in the application itself.

Control

Control, as mentioned earlier, is carried out by two buttons: turning on and switching modes. Modes can be changed by combinations of these two buttons, or you can simply by placing a smart attachment on the brush.

The four attachments included with the Sonicare are all designed for different purposes. Each contains a chip that allows the brush to recognize them and automatically launch the desired program. The nozzle is also marked with a number and letter designation, which will help the user choose a manual cleaning method. The explanation of these symbols is in the welcome card (but it is not in the user manual, where the attachments are called by their full name).

  • C3: Deep cleaning
  • W3: Stain removal
  • G3: Gum care
  • T1: Tongue care

Each nozzle is associated with its own program and power, but during the cleaning process the power can be changed by pressing the mode selection button. True, the user manual specifically states that cleaning with an automatically selected program leads to the best result, but the ability to increase or decrease power seems to us to be a very correct option.

You can only switch the intensity if the brush is turned on. If you start doing this before cleaning, then everything will be fine, but if during the process, drops of water with paste are guaranteed to get everything around. By the way, this is why you should not remove the brush from your mouth during the brushing process.

When the head wears out, the brush itself will send a signal that it’s time to buy a new one. This mode can be turned off and on at the user’s request: if the brush is in the charger, you need to hold down the mode change button and press the device’s power button three times. If you hear two sounds, the mode is turned on. If there is one, the mode was turned on, but now it is turned off. The default is enabled.

To change other modes, the procedure is similar. The brush can be set to gradually increase the intensity of cleaning - in order to get used to the sensations and not immediately load your teeth with a full start. During the first 14 procedures, the power will increase gradually - this mode is called Easy Start. To enable this mode in the already familiar procedure, two clicks will be required.

Brush Pacer is a mode that allows you to clean every part of your mouth equally thoroughly. It happens that you begin a procedure with full responsibility, and then get distracted and do not pay due attention to it. For such absent-minded people, an audio reminder to change areas of activity will be very useful. True, it also has disadvantages: if one or another part of the dentition requires close attention, then sometimes you have to leave it uncleaned.

At first it is very confusing that after the end of the cycle the brush automatically turns off, but then you realize that you can turn it on again and clean the problem areas. By the way, you don’t have to turn it on - using it like a regular toothbrush is also not forbidden (although why would you?).

And you can switch cleaning modes, regardless of the nozzle, when the brush is turned off. By the way, it remembers the last selected mode and applies it next time. Convenient if you don't clean your tongue.

At the bottom of the case there is an additional indicator - a ring, which signals with purple light that the user is pressing too hard on the teeth with the brush. This signal is bright and clearly visible, but due to its location, it is visible only if you brush your teeth in front of a mirror (and this is not always possible). Therefore it is duplicated with sound.

Exploitation

In principle, in order to start using a toothbrush, you don’t even have to read the instructions. You can simply choose one of the attachments that seems most comfortable, connect and clean. In the process, you very quickly come to understand that a regular sound signal accompanying brushing means a change in the sector of the oral cavity, and turning off after a certain time is not evidence that the brush is discharged or broken. But it’s better to read the instructions first and then brush your teeth.

Among the advantages of the brush, it should be noted that the vibration and operation of the motor during the cleaning process are almost inaudible from the outside, although the buzzing of the brush, of course, seems much louder to the user. We checked: if you don’t close the door to the bathroom tightly, you can no longer hear anything in the corridor - the water running into the bathtub or sink makes more noise. You can also talk next to the brush when it is on, without having to raise your voice. But since the buzzing is inside the ear and - worse - from the inside, the user will be much worse able to hear external sounds.

One of the things you have to get used to when using any electric toothbrush is the spray of toothpaste and water that flies in all directions if you turn on the brush before putting it in your mouth. Our model is no exception. Note for left-handed people: it doesn’t matter which hand you use to brush your teeth; it’s comfortable for both your right and your left.

According to the manufacturer, the brush uses patented Sonicare technology. Its difference is that the nozzle is stationary (in many models it rotates) - and only the bristles vibrate, as if sweeping away plaque and food particles from the surface of the teeth and from the interdental space. This creates an irrigation effect - a flow of liquid from saliva, paste and water washes away plaque and cleans hard-to-reach areas. Two minor consequences from this postulate: firstly, the splashes fly along a different trajectory and with a different intensity, so when switching from another brush you risk splashing the mirror. Secondly, the sensations when cleaning may seem unusual at first.

By the way, it should be noted: thanks to the cleaning features of Sonicare, the form factor of the nozzle is close to a traditional toothbrush - it is not round, but oval. On the one hand, this helps to cover a larger surface of the dentition and clean more thoroughly, on the other hand, it provokes the user to make habitual movements, which should be avoided during electric cleaning.

Nozzles for different purposes differ not only in the color of the bristles and the plastic of the head, but also in the location of the bristles. The bristles of the attachments are elastic, quite comfortable when cleaning, and of medium hardness.

The attachments are put on the brush in only one position (with the bristles towards the front of the brush), and with some effort. They are removed almost effortlessly, smoothly; they stay tight during the process.

It is also worth pointing out that the tongue cleaning attachment is pleasant to use and does not injure the surface, but the cleaning procedure is very ticklish. You need to get used to it gradually, so the automatic program provides three approaches of 20 seconds, between which you need to rinse your mouth and nozzle.

Since all the heads are different, the toothbrush can be used as a family toothbrush with some restrictions: you should agree in advance who needs gum care and who needs thorough whitening, and not mix up the heads. Or buy an additional set.

But for children, Philips has its own separate device, Sonicare For Kids: a children's brush with its own application, which teaches children how to properly brush their teeth in a playful way.

Both in the user manual, on the box, and in the welcome brochure it is mentioned that the brush is paired with a smartphone - you just need to install a special application. It's free, doesn't take up much memory space, and doesn't spam you with reminders and calls to brush your teeth immediately.

When installed, the application offers to communicate with the toothbrush via Bluetooth. To do this, you need to turn on Bluetooth on your phone and activate the toothbrush (for example, press the mode change button). Then they will agree on their own. If for some reason this does not happen, you can connect manually by selecting the brush model from the list.

You will need to connect the brush every time you start the application. It doesn't work the other way around: if you turn on the brush, it won't search for your phone or call up the app.

When the brush is connected, the app will show valuable dental advice and prompt you to start brushing. Now press the button to turn on the brush and follow the application’s advice on which area of the teeth you should start with. The default is top right, but this setting can always be changed.

If you press too hard on the brush or brush too vigorously, the application will ask you to ease the pressure or not make too many movements. After some time, such unobtrusive guidance leads to the fact that the hand gets used to moving the brush in an optimal way.

The application tracks your progress, compares it with previous achievements and does not forget to praise or recommend additional dental and oral care. In order for it to better understand what problems you need to solve, mark in it the features of your teeth - on the same map that dentists use. The app itself will indicate where you haven't brushed enough and where you're brushing too hard, but it won't recognize caries or bleeding gums.

You can save the results of cleaning for a period specified by you, send them to the dentist, and in the same place, in the application, plan a visit to this specialist. We’re not sure if this is widespread in our reality, but if you have a regular dentist and you can contact him in one of the applications installed on your phone, you can create a report and share it - even on your Instagram feed.

Of course, if you brush your teeth without an app, such research will suffer from incompleteness: the brush is not smart enough to remember the results of brushing without the help of a smartphone.

And finally, let’s mention one of the main inconveniences of using the application: you have to constantly look at your smartphone, which means you have to put it somewhere. And finding a safe place for it in the bathroom and not getting splashed in the process is quite difficult.

A few words about powering the brush with electricity. The charge indicator on the pen shows how long it can be used and whether it’s time to put it in a glass to recharge. The manufacturer believes that it will definitely have enough battery life for two weeks, and then it will need to be charged. In the box, the brush is ready for use, and after it is discharged for the first time, it is advised to charge it for at least a day.

The stationary brush charger consists of two parts: a stand, which is directly connected to the outlet, and a glass. Yes, a glass charging cup is exactly what we need in our bathroom. Especially if it hits the tiles in a big way. But until this happens, this “charger” looks very stylish and complements the bathroom design beautifully. By the way, it is not said anywhere whether this glass can be used for rinsing teeth, but something tells us that it can be done - if you then wipe it dry.

The brush can be placed vertically in a glass, but not for long: the bottom of the glass is round, the cut of the brush is rectangular. But if the brush rests on the edge of the glass and is not tightly adjacent to its bottom, then it still charges perfectly. We checked.

A travel case can also work as a charger. To do this, there is an immediately noticeable cover on its bottom, opening which we found a wire for communication with the laptop. Having inserted the USB connector of this wire into the corresponding socket on the computer, we heard a sound corresponding to the start of charging the battery, and the white charging indicator on the brush body began to blink. Of course, the power of such a power supply is less, and therefore full charging will take longer.

A couple more words about the travel case: despite all the practicality of this solution, it has one drawback - the case is quite large and weighty, so if you are going to travel with one backpack, carefully consider whether you really need it.

Everything that comes into contact with electricity - the charger and the travel case - can be wiped with a slightly damp cloth and immediately wiped dry. The brush itself should also be wiped after use, removing traces of paste and water. From time to time, you need to remove the attachments, wash the bristles and rinse the attachment point - on the attachment and on the handle itself - with warm water. After just two or three uses, a white coating from the paste appears there, which would be good to remove.

It should be noted that everything except the glass cannot be washed in the dishwasher, no matter how much you would like to.

If you neglect care procedures, your brush will quickly start to look sloppy. And although this does not affect its cleaning properties at all, it can spoil your mood in the morning.

conclusions

The Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart electric toothbrush is an easy-to-use tool for daily brushing. The mobile application helps you use it for its intended purpose with due regularity - it’s always nice to compete with yourself and achieve your goals. And the dentist will no longer find fault with the fact that there is plaque and traces of coffee and smoking on the teeth: after a week of use, the teeth become significantly whiter. True, before this, an ordinary, non-electric toothbrush was used.

Terms of use

The first thing the owner of this type of toothbrush should know is that they don’t brush their teeth like they usually do.

  • Under no circumstances should it make translational movements along the surface of the teeth.
  • When brushing, you need to stop the nozzle on the surface of each tooth for 3-5 seconds so that it only gently touches its surface. After this, you can begin brushing the next tooth.
  • You can choose the order of brushing your teeth yourself. At the same time, it is necessary to remember one important piece of advice that manufacturers give to their customers - do not put pressure on the tooth and hold the brush on it for too long.

Can electric toothbrushes cause harm?

The Philips sonicare electric toothbrush makes it easy to keep your mouth clean. However, it is not recommended to use it too often, otherwise you will cause harm instead of benefit. Accessories of this type are not intended for daily use. To avoid serious miscalculations , be sure to consult your dentist before purchasing this device. It may be that you may not be able to use it for dental care.

The principle of operation of this brush is such that it affects only that part of the tooth that is located next to its root. If a person has a certain dental disease, the gums can sometimes recede slightly, exposing the root portion of the tooth. If you use such a brush too often, then, according to dentists, pretty soon a person’s teeth may begin to loosen.

What to look for when choosing

According to experts, the most important properties and characteristics are:

  1. Type – mechanical, sonic or ultrasonic. The first option is similar to manual cleaning brushes, but is superior to them in the speed of movement of the bristles. Sound models are equipped with a generator that produces waves, thanks to which the bristles move. Such models are more effective than manual and mechanical ones, but are often inferior to ultrasonic ones, since ultrasound itself actively affects bacteria and plaque. However, the third type also has a drawback - ultrasonic waves can negatively affect installed fillings, crowns and artificial teeth, so you should consult your dentist before choosing. Most Philips brushes are of the sonic type.
  2. Battery or battery operated. Cordless toothbrushes are more convenient for home use - the charge usually lasts for at least a week of use, and the benefit is that you don’t have to buy batteries. For travel, battery-powered models are usually more convenient because there is no need to carry a charging station with you. However, some brushes have a cover, which is also a means of recharging the battery.
  3. Number of attachments and additional features that increase efficiency and ease of use. These include a timer, a pressure sensor, the presence of different modes, the ability to synchronize with mobile applications, and so on.

Brushes for children

Today you can find on sale both ultrasonic and electric brushes that small children can use to care for their teeth. Typically, these brushes have handles shaped like toys. They are an ideal option for children, because they perceive this useful accessory as a toy and can spend a lot of time with it .

But you need to keep in mind that the child may be so absorbed in the game that he does not want to learn the much-needed hygiene procedure. Without understanding its essence, it will be difficult for a person to develop physical memory of the hand, since parents often take on the responsibility of brushing their children’s teeth. Not everyone is able to teach their children to use such a brush on their own. This is often hampered by the large weight of the product, as well as the presence of a power supply in its design.

Philips today offers a special type of dental care device - Philips sonicare For Kids electric brushes. This device is designed for young children and can easily help them learn how to care for their teeth.

What makes this brush unique is that it can be synced with educational apps on your smartphone or tablet. And then the boring oral care procedure turns into a very interesting game. Children themselves can choose the best option for setting up the device for more convenient and effective teeth cleaning. This is facilitated by the softness of the pile, which is not capable of injuring the gums and enamel.

The Philips sonicare toothbrush is also suitable for those consumers who intend to use it to care for braces. There is no need to worry that the product will harm them. Although experts still recommend using a regular electric brush. Ultrasonic methods in this regard do not seem to be the best solution, since they can destroy the base of the bracket.

Philips Sonicare For Kids HX6322/04

The HX6322/04 is more expensive than the previous model, but is superior to it by having an additional attachment and the ability to synchronize with a smartphone. It is worth noting that there are many applications that allow you not only to control the process of brushing your teeth, but also to maintain the user’s interest. The brush manufacturer, Philips, also has its own application, and it is aimed specifically at children. The Philips line of electric toothbrushes and the Sonicare app have deservedly received a lot of rave reviews from parents - with them, children themselves want to brush their teeth, and do it with pleasure, and not because it is required of them.

Advantages

  • 2 nozzles and 2 operating modes - standard and delicate cleaning
  • Ability to synchronize with a smartphone via Bluetooth interface and use applications
  • The standard Sonicare application from Philips will not only tell your child how to brush his teeth in a playful way, but will also really get him interested in this activity.
  • Rarely requires recharging
  • Pleasant design and ergonomics

Flaws

  • A little heavy for children under 5-7 years old
  • No carrying case

Prices

I would like to start reviewing electric brushes for dental care with the Philips Sonicare Diamondclean Black HX9352 model. It appeared on the Russian market relatively recently, so not everyone knows about the features of this new product. First of all, it must be said that this brush is made in a stylish black color. It comes with a special case for easy transportation, which simultaneously functions as a charger and has a USB output for this. Also included with the toothbrush:

  • Charger;
  • two attachments for dental care;
  • a set of caps for hygienic storage of nozzles;
  • adapter socket.

The product is covered by a two-year manufacturer's warranty. Among the features of the model, it is worth highlighting the presence of five different operating modes. It contains a battery, thanks to which the brush can operate without additional recharging for up to 3 weeks. You can buy this model of electric toothbrush in stores for 14 thousand rubles.

The next model that I would like to consider is Philips Sonicare Cleancare – HX6511. It deserves attention also because of its lower price. At first, it can be used in a special mode, which is specifically designed for habituation. After becoming familiar with all the possibilities, the brush can be switched to intensive operation.

It should be said that this Philips toothbrush model is not waterproof. Therefore, you need to be careful with it and not immerse it, as well as individual parts, in water. This is also stated in the instructions for use, which is included in the standard package of this brush. It is necessary to start brushing teeth with an electric brush only after the owner makes sure that the entire surface is dry.

It takes approximately 24 hours to charge the brush . At the same time , the battery charge is enough for it to work for 40 minutes. Keeping in mind that on average cleaning takes no more than 2 minutes, it is easy to calculate that one battery charge will last for quite a long time. A similar model of an electric toothbrush can be purchased for 3-6 thousand rubles.

Children's heads can be used with "adult" toothbrush models, but Philips Sonicare For Kids will better teach your child to brush their teeth regularly.

Consumer Reviews

A person who needs to rush to work or school early in the morning has to carve out time in his schedule to brush his teeth, although this is not always possible. It is very difficult to carry out this mandatory procedure in the evening, when it is time to go to bed. After all, when you come home, you only have enough strength to walk to the bed and fall asleep. Thanks to the technical device in question, you can easily turn a boring procedure into a more enjoyable process. Knowing this, many people do not refuse this opportunity.

Most customers have found from personal experience that Philips electric and ultrasonic toothbrushes are much more effective than any traditional personal care product that many of us have used over the past years. Using electric brushes, you can thoroughly clean your teeth from plaque and make them whiter. It is noteworthy that a similar effect is achieved even without the use of special whitening compounds.

Electric toothbrushes allow you to save on toothpaste, as well as whitening and hygienic cleaning products and procedures, which are preferably carried out every three months in the dental office. Such dental care can reduce the likelihood of caries and destruction of tooth enamel due to cervical plaque that appears on it. This is one of the main reasons to visit dental clinics that are unloved by many less often.
