Antibacterial drugs for the throat

Medicines for children

Not all medications are suitable for children.
For the treatment of children in the first year of life, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antibacterial drugs are used in the form of rectal suppositories or soluble tablets, for example “Viferon”, “Anaferon”. Therapy for older children can be supplemented with rinsing, irrigation, and lubricating the mucous membrane with medications. At high body temperatures, antipyretics are used in the form of syrups, often based on ibuprofen or paracetamol. When using medicinal sprays, the medicine should be sprayed onto the buccal mucosa. The active substance will reach the sore throat along with saliva.

Sucking tablets, lozenges and lozenges are rarely prescribed to young children, since not everyone can swallow them. In rare cases, to eliminate sore throat, it is recommended to use instant tablets, for example, Faringosept, Lizobakt.

Why does my throat hurt?

There are many reasons why your throat hurts:

  • The leading positions are occupied by inflammatory diseases of the nasopharynx caused by viruses, bacteria or Candida fungi.
  • Chemical burns or injuries with damage to the mucous membrane are common. It is dangerous to inhale vapors of aggressive substances; you should immediately contact an otolaryngologist if a fish bone gets into your throat.
  • Discomfort in the throat and difficulty breathing can cause thyroid disease, which is how diabetes manifests itself.
  • Oncological diseases make themselves known by a burning sensation in the nasopharynx, pain and the presence of a lump in the larynx.

Therefore, doctors strongly recommend visiting a doctor before starting any medication. Correct diagnosis will make the treatment process effective. When choosing a medicine, you should carefully read the section on contraindications. It is not recommended to exceed the indicated dosage.

What drugs will quickly help with tonsillitis or sore throat?

List of medications and effective remedies for sore throatPain when swallowing and increased temperature in acute
tonsillitis

Sore throat is considered a complex form of tonsillitis; in the absence of proper treatment, the process quickly becomes chronic. The disease is characterized by a sharp rise in temperature to 39°C and above, unbearable pain in the throat, and difficulty in taking a breath: due to swollen tonsils, the passage in the larynx narrows. Nasal congestion is rare, but purulent plugs are noticeable on the surface of the tonsils. In chronic conditions, exudate may accumulate within the lymphoid tissues. A cough appears because the mucous membrane is irritated.

A complex of drugs is prescribed for treatment:

The causative agent of these diseases is bacteria

Therefore, it is important to take antibiotics. Sumamed, Augmentin, Flemoclav and another effective option from the penicillin group or a number of macrolides are effective. These drugs act directly on the membranes of the cocci, damaging pathogenic cells. It is important to pay attention to the removal of pathogenic microflora

For gargling, both folk recipes and ready-made pharmacy solutions are used. Additionally, a local antibiotic spray Bioparox Aerosol may be prescribed; it is not used until 3 years of age and is not recommended during pregnancy. Other categories of patients can use it if there are no contraindications. This is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent that has an additional effect on bacteria, relieves pain, and reduces swelling. Antiseptic spray, lozenges, lozenges, which are considered universal for treating the throat.

The best pharmacy products

Today, proven medications or the latest developments that combine effectiveness and reasonable cost remain in demand. Effective remedies for sore throat are divided into several subgroups:

  • Analgesic and anti-inflammatory. These medications affect the body in general and the sore throat area. These medications include all non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
  • Antiseptics in different forms: spray, lozenges, lozenges.
  • Combination drugs that combine several components in different configurations. They contain antibacterial, disinfectant, softening, decongestant and analgesic components.

A cheaper option is only folk remedies. But will they help you recover in a short time?

Based on what factors to choose drugs

Are there really no remedies for sore throat that do not require any significant financial costs, or at least are very accessible and cheap? Of course there are, and these are gargles. Let's look at the most popular prescription recipes, which you can purchase at a pharmacy or prepare yourself at home.

Rating: 4.9

The explanation of the action is very simple. Table salt, being in a fairly concentrated solution, begins to draw water from the surface of the swollen tonsils and the oral mucosa. This reduces swelling and irritation of pain receptors. It’s not for nothing that bandages with hypertonic salt solution have long been successfully used in surgery to treat open and festering wounds

Iodine performs a disinfectant and antimicrobial function, and in case of iodine intolerance, thyroid pathology, or taking iodine-containing medications, it can be replaced with another surface antiseptic - a few drops of brilliant green solution.

List of medications and effective remedies for sore throat

Should I add baking soda? Many people add baking soda along with salt. In fact, soda, as a product exhibiting basic (alkaline) properties, helps loosen the mucous membrane of the oropharynx and the surface of the tonsils. A looser surface is a convenient substrate for the mechanical retention of plaque and microbial cells on it, and it is better to avoid the appearance of such ready-made environments for the development of microorganisms. Therefore, it is better to do without soda.

Throat tablets are inexpensive but effective and can be divided into several groups depending on their pharmacological focus. Some of them help to quickly cope with pain caused by a cold, while others have an antiallergic effect.

To make it more convenient to choose the right medicine, you need to understand the classification:

  1. Antiseptics. They have a negative effect on pathogenic bacteria that cause inflammation and infection. They do not allow the creation of a “favorable environment” for the proliferation of bacteria, due to which the microbes die and inflammation does not progress. This group includes drugs: Orasept, Angilex, Hexalize, Chlorophyllipt and others.
  2. Antibiotics. These medications contain substances that have an antibacterial effect on the body. They directly affect the microorganisms themselves, suppressing them and causing death. Among these products I would like to highlight Anzibel and Grammilin Neo.
  3. Combined. These drugs contain several active components that act in several directions at once. These may be agents that simultaneously have an analgesic, antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory effect. But these drugs are most often prescribed in cases where the causative agent of the infection cannot be identified.
  4. Antihistamines. Help relieve allergy symptoms. Such remedies can alleviate the patient’s condition in a short time, removing pain, soreness and breathing problems. Good reviews about such drugs: Suprastin, Edem, Fenistil.
  5. Immunomodulators (Imudon). The action of these drugs is aimed at supporting the immune system, giving it the strength to fight pathogens. They help quickly restore the microflora of the throat and oral cavity. Such medications are recommended for use as prophylaxis or during the recovery period after an illness.

Despite the fact that all these drugs are sold in pharmacies without a doctor’s prescription, the doctor must still select the dose; self-medication can lead to irreparable consequences.

Throat tablets are inexpensive, but effective ones must be chosen following several rules:

  • if there is a bacterial process in the throat, then antibiotics should be taken as the basis for complex treatment, the inflammatory process provoked by a virus can be stopped with direct-acting antivirals and immunomodulators, and if it is still a fungal infection, then antimycotic drugs are selected;
  • rinsing can be carried out with any solution with an antiseptic effect; they quickly and effectively kill microbes on the mucous membranes of the mouth and nasopharynx, but use them only as an aid;
  • if the mouth experiences dryness, itching and irritation, then additionally you need to use moisturizing and healing products based on oil;
  • if the pain syndrome is severe, it is recommended to use an antiseptic with an anesthetic in combination.

Mechanism of action and method of application

  • to accelerate the healing of the oral mucosa after surgery or ulcers;
  • pain relief;
  • accelerating the healing of ulcers and stomatitis;
  • suppression of pathogenic microflora, which can cause inflammation in the oral cavity;
  • eliminating bad breath.

Each of the listed effects will depend on the main active ingredient included in the drug.
Often, an antiseptic can have a combined effect, that is, it is a means for treating several diseases and preventing their occurrence. Throat lozenges are effective medicines. They quickly eliminate the clinical signs of the disease and stop the further development of inflammation, which causes pain in the throat. Such tablets, lozenges and lozenges contain antiseptics and disinfectants that destroy microbes living in the oral cavity by disrupting the integrity of their cell membranes.

Excipients have an anti-inflammatory and distracting effect. They eliminate pain, soften and moisturize the mucous membrane of the pharynx and larynx. A number of drugs contain NSAIDs that suppress the release of inflammatory mediators and relieve pain, discomfort, itchy throat and the urge to cough.

Contraindications:

  1. Children's age: lozenges are allowed for children from 3 years old, and lollipops - from 5 years old,
  2. Individual intolerance to the components of the drug,
  3. Allergy,
  4. Ulcers and erosions on the gastrointestinal mucosa,
  5. Fructose intolerance,
  6. Bronchial asthma,
  7. Damage to the oral mucosa.

Throat tablets are complete and effective medications that are freely sold in the pharmacy chain. Before using them, you should consult your doctor and carefully read the instructions. A specialist will help you choose the right dosage of the drug in accordance with your age and characteristics of the disease.

Rules for using effective remedies for sore throat:

  • Complete absorption of the drug
  • Take the medicine strictly after eating and drinking,
  • Abstaining from food for two hours will allow the medicine to be completely absorbed by the body,
  • In the absence of a therapeutic effect, replacing the drug with a similar drug,
  • Increased sore throat, fever, or deterioration in the patient’s well-being require an urgent visit to the doctor.

Redness of the nasopharynx.

  • Trauma of any etiology.
  • Damage to the throat mucosa from hot liquids.
  • Consequences of bronchoscopy, x-ray or radiotherapy of the neck organs.
  • Allergic reactions to food, medications, or insect bites.
  • The presence of inflammation in the oral cavity and purulent foci of the pharynx.
  • Worsening of chronic diseases of the heart, kidneys, and hepatobiliary system.
  • Presence of particularly dangerous infections
  • Cancerous tumors of the laryngeal region
  • Changes in blood flow due to compression of venous and lymphatic vessels.
  • Chondroperichondritis of the larynx.
  • Purulent laryngitis.

Classification of painkillers

All remedies for sore throat can be divided into groups depending on the form of release. These include: lollipops, tablets and lozenges, sprays for irrigating the larynx, as well as rinsing solutions. Each form is effective in its own way, so the choice depends on the individual characteristics of the patient and the nature of the disease.

Depending on the mode of action, medications are divided into:

Antiseptic

Antiseptic - the main task is to suppress the replication of pathogens, which leads to a reduction in the inflammatory process and, as a result, the disappearance of negative symptoms.

The development of side effects occurs very rarely due to the absence of a systemic effect on the body. The product is applied topically and therefore does not enter the bloodstream. Antiseptics are most effective at the very beginning of the disease, until the pathogen has descended into the bronchi. This group includes:

  • Hexasprey,
  • Orasept,
  • Tantum Verde,
  • Decathylene and others.

Antibacterial

This type of medication shows its activity against bacterial pathogens, for example, streptococci (the most common causes of sore throat). The product acts directly on pathological microorganisms, preventing their replication, which ultimately leads to their destruction.

When choosing antimicrobial agents, extreme care must be taken as they are usually effective against certain pathogens. In addition, it is necessary to take into account the age group and general health status of the patients.

Antibacterial drugs include:

  • Grammidin Neo and its analogues,
  • Anzibel,
  • Hexalize.

Homeopathic

Products based on natural and often herbal ingredients. This minimizes the risk of side effects and allergic reactions, which is why they are widely used during pregnancy and childhood.

The effectiveness of this group is quite controversial due to the lack of an antimicrobial component in the composition. However, as part of complex treatment, this group can be quite effective.

Representatives of homeopathic medicines are:

  • Tonsilgon and its analogues,
  • Angin-Heel,
  • Tonsilotren.

Immunomodulatory

Immunomodulatory - have a stimulating effect on the human immune system, and also have an antiviral effect

It is important to start taking it at the first sign of a viral disease

The longer the pathological process develops, the less effective the remedy is. It is also not recommended for use in immunodeficiency states, as it will either have no effect or will worsen the situation. A prominent representative of the group is Imudon or its analogues.

Antihistamines

Products containing an antiallergic component. This allows you to reduce swelling of the soft tissues and eliminate inflammation. However, they must be used as part of complex therapy. The most popular antihistamines are:

  • Erius,
  • Diazolin,
  • Fenistil,
  • Suprastin and its analogues,
  • Eden.

It is important to note that manufacturers mainly try to produce complex tablets for sore throat. This allows you to solve several problems at once

For example, remove inflammation, destroy pathogenic microflora and remove pain. However, there is a danger that independent use of such drugs will blur the clinical picture.

Help relieve pain and eliminate soreness. They have a disinfecting effect, since the composition is supplemented with disinfecting components. They are applied topically and are almost not absorbed into the bloodstream. Thanks to this, there are no severe side effects.

The products are presented in IV generations, having different composition and duration of action. I and III generation drugs are considered the safest and most effective. They are well tolerated and can be taken for a long time.

Antibiotics

They affect the root cause of the disease - bacteria: they stop their growth, prevent their reproduction and destroy them. These agents have high antimicrobial activity and are low toxic to the human body. Taking them allows you to prevent the development of complications and activate the recovery process. When choosing a medicine, it is necessary to take into account the type of pathogen, the individual characteristics of the body and the age of the patient.

They consist of several active components, each of which is characterized by its own action. Most often, the drugs are based on antiseptics and anesthetics. Taking them allows you to:

  1. Quickly relieve pain.
  2. Stop the growth and reproduction of pathogenic microorganisms.
  3. Prevent the development of mucosal edema.
  4. Disinfect the mucous membrane of the throat and the surface of the tonsils.

Lozenges for adults

This is a dosage form that acts directly in the area of inflammation. The active substance is slowly released in the oral cavity, which provides a longer effect on the affected area and increases the effectiveness of treatment.

The most numerous list of lozenges consists of combination products containing deodorizing components, antiseptics, anesthetics, extracts of medicinal plants and essential oils. "Tantum Verde"

An effective anti-inflammatory, anesthetic and pain reliever. Quickly relieves pain and cough, relieves swelling, promotes the resorption of purulent plugs on the tonsils. Types of antiseptics

Antiseptics can be used in the form of:

  • sprays for irrigating the throat and mouth (nose);
  • tablets, lozenges and lozenges;
  • solutions for gargling and mouthwash;
  • solutions for treating tonsils and gums using a spatula with gauze.

Many manufacturers produce one antiseptic in several forms for ease of use. For example, it is difficult for children under 3 years of age to control resorption, and they often swallow the tablet, which negates its local antiseptic effect, increases the level of side effects, and, moreover, carries the risk of the tablet getting stuck in the child’s throat and, as a result, traumatizing the mucous membrane. Treatment with a spatula is convenient for localized infections: the presence of pustules on the tonsils, gingivitis.
