Pharmacological action of Decasan
The main principle of the drug's operation is that it can make the target cell membrane almost impenetrable, which occurs due to the connection with lipid structures in the region of their phosphatidic groups. Due to the fact that the membrane changes its permeability, homeostasis is disrupted directly in its internal part, and the virus is completely destroyed. Decasan is completely safe for humans, since it does not have any negative effect on the total number of cells in the entire body.
Also in the instructions for Dekasan it is noted that as a result of numerous experiments and analyzes it was found that it causes the final death of a fairly large number of strains of gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms. These include pathogens of diphtheria, staphylococci, streptococci, pathogens of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, etc. Decasan has a disinfectant effect on trichophytes, epidermophytes, yeast-like fungi, erythrasmas and other mold-like fungi. The drug exerts its antiprotozoal ability by acting directly on Trichomonas and Giardia. Decasan is a universal remedy in the fight against viruses. During the research, it was found that there are no bacteria in nature that it cannot cope with. The bacteriostatic effect of Decasan can be considered the initial stage of bactericidal manifestation.
Decasan is practically not absorbed into the blood and does not penetrate the skin and mucous membranes.
Pharmacological properties of the drug Dekasan
Decamethoxin ([1,10-Decamethylene-(N,N-dimethylmentoxycarbonylmethyl) ammonium dichloride]) is an antiseptic, bis-quaternary ammonium derivative. Concentrating on the cytoplasmic membrane of the microbial cell, it binds to the phosphatidic groups of membrane lipids and disrupts its permeability. Decamethoxin has a pronounced bactericidal effect on staphylococci, streptococci, diphtheria and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, capsular bacteria and a fungicidal effect on yeast fungi, pathogens of epidermophytosis, trichophytosis, microsporia, erythrasma, some types of mold fungi (Aspergillus, penicillium), antiprotozoal effect on Trichomonas, Giardia, viricidal effect on viruses. Highly active against microorganisms resistant to antibiotics (penicillin, chloramphenicol, tetracyclines, streptomycin, monomycin, kanamycin, neomycin, novobiocin, erythromycin, oleandomycin, etc.). The formation of decamethoxin-resistant forms of microorganisms with long-term use occurs slowly. Bacteriostatic (fungistatic) concentrations of the drug are close to its bactericidal (fungicidal), viricidal, antiprotozoal concentrations. During treatment with Decasan, the sensitivity of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms to antibiotics increases. When used externally in the form of rinses or lotions, the drug is practically not absorbed through intact skin, mucous membranes and wound surfaces.

Decasan solution for throat - instructions for using the drug
Decasan is a drug that has antimicrobial and antiseptic effects. This is an excellent disinfectant; it almost instantly neutralizes staphylococci, streptococci and diphtheria bacillus.
The cost of such a medical product on the Russian pharmaceutical market ranges from 100 to 150 rubles, and in Ukraine – from 50 to 75 hryvnia. The price of Decasana varies depending on the brand of the pharmaceutical company and the volume of the medicine, while still remaining very affordable for every buyer.
What can it be used for?
- neutralization of pustular skin infections,
- stomatitis and periodontal disease in the acute stage,
- chronic diseases of the bronchi, which are characterized by the presence of purulent discharge,
- if necessary, high-quality diagnosis of sore throat and tonsillitis,
- for gargling in the presence of diphtheria infection and staphylococcus,
- in the event of certain ulcerative diseases: colitis, paraproctitis, sigmioditis,
- in the case of certain gynecological diseases that have an infectious structure: vaginitis, vulvitis, endomitritis, cervical erosion,
- treatment of urological diseases: prostatitis, urethritis, cystitis and others,
- peritonitis and pleurisy,
- when treating prenatal canals,
- as a hand disinfectant and for sterilizing gloves.
Pediatricians advise that when carrying out inhalations using a nebulizer, add Decasan solution to it. These manipulations should be carried out already at the initial stage of colds , because just a few procedures can block the development of infection and the appearance of fever in a child.
The drug works due to the fact that, when it gets into the pharynx, it disinfects the mucous surface of the nasopharynx without drying it out. Inhalations with the solution help to completely neutralize a runny nose, relieving swelling due to the bactericidal components of the drug.
The price of the medicine is very reasonable, which is why every parent has the opportunity to purchase Dekasan and prevent the activation of a cold, thereby protecting their child from undesirable consequences.
Inhalations for the throat and nasal cavity
Even infants can carry out inhalations with the addition of such a solution , however, in this case, it is necessary to dilute it with saline solution in equal proportions.
For an inhaler, 4 ml will be enough, that is, add half of it to Decasan solution, and the other half to saline solution. Children over 12 years of age do not need to dilute the drug, as they require a higher dosage of 5-10 ml.
The frequency of procedures may vary, however, it is advisable to provide at least 1-2 inhalations per day.
Dekasan for gargling and washing
Decasan is also used for various inflammatory processes in the oral cavity, but in such cases it is not recommended to dilute according to the instructions.
- In case of injuries to the oral cavity, applications are carried out with the addition of 50 ml of solution for 15 minutes, or an alternative option is possible: gargling with 150 ml of pure solution.
- Periodontal disease in the acute stage is treated in a similar way, focusing on reducing pain, after which the procedure can be stopped until the next appointment.
- For candidiasis or ulcers of the oral mucosa, rinse the cavity for 10 days; it is important not to interrupt the course until the desired therapeutic effect is obtained.
- If the baby's tonsils have undergone an inflammatory process, then rinsing with 50-70 ml of solution should be provided. When performing the procedure, it is important to focus on the affected area.
- In the case of diphtheria infections and staphylococcus, active nasal rinsing and gargling are carried out 5 times a day, and the course of treatment can be changed as necessary.
- Decasan can be used as nasal drops for runny nose and other colds, but in this case it should be diluted in a 3:1 ratio.
There is also the practice of using Decasan solution for therapeutic effects on skin diseases. In such cases, it is not diluted, the frequency of procedures is up to 5 per day , and the course of treatment averages 5 days.
Dekasan for sore throat
This drug works exclusively on the surface of tissues (skin and mucous membranes); when more serious and deep infections occur, it is considered ineffective. Thus, with angina, the infection is not located on the surface, but in the deeper areas of the tonsils, and therefore Decasan solution will not be able to cope with such a diagnosis, since it is a local disinfectant.
If you have a sore throat, you should not gargle, because using such a solution can provoke the appearance of allergic rashes .
Side effects
In medicine, it is quite rare to find consumer reviews indicating side effects in the form of redness of the skin surface, discomfort, and a minor allergic rash, however, they still exist.
It is worth noting that side effects of this kind do not require treatment; you just have to stop using the solution and they will disappear on their own. Decasan is the safest medicine possible, because it can be used even for young children.
However, patients with individual intolerance to one of the components of the solution should avoid it.
Decasan interacts well with other medications, enhancing the effect of some of them (antibiotics), but during the course of therapy it is better to avoid using toilet soap.
Analogs in Russia
- Gorosten is a local antiseptic; it is often used to clean hands in medical institutions.
- Septefril is a drug that has a broad antiseptic effect.
Additional Information
It is worth noting that Dekasan does not affect concentration, therefore it is allowed to drive during the course of treatment. The shelf life of the drug is 3 years. Storage conditions: temperature 18 – 25 degrees, no high humidity and no exposure to direct sunlight. The drug is not recommended to be used in parallel with alcohol.
Decasan has a very affordable price, but it is quite difficult to find it in Russian pharmacies.

Treatment of various diseases
It is recommended to treat various pathologies of the respiratory system with the help of dekasan. As mentioned above, this remedy helps get rid of respiratory pathologies, ARVI and other ailments of the lung tissue. In addition, with a properly selected set of therapeutic measures, the drug can enhance the effect of antimicrobial agents.
Runny nose
When you have a runny nose, it is useful not only to breathe the drug, but also to rinse it. Douching is especially effective for a runny nose caused by the following pathologies:
- adenoids;
- sinusitis;
- ethmoiditis.
Moreover, if a person is bothered by a runny nose and there is no admixture of pus in the secreted secretion, the medication in question is not used.
Bronchitis
Often, bronchitis is accompanied by such unpleasant symptoms as a dry or barking cough with purulent sputum that is difficult to separate. For such pathologies, inhalations with decasan are indicated.
As mentioned above, adults can use the solution in its pure form, but for children the product requires dilution. The instructions included with the drug say:
- for children under 12 years old, one nebula is diluted in equal quantities with Borjomi and the procedure is carried out 2 times a day;
- adults are advised to use two undiluted nebulas per manipulation;
- for children, inhalation time is 5 minutes;
- adults should increase the session duration to 10 minutes.
Do not miss useful information: Use of Atrovent for inhalation for children and adults
As for the course of treatment, its duration is up to two weeks for acute bronchitis, up to 30 days for chronic pathology and up to 7 days for mild cases.
Angina
Decasan is often used for acute tonsillitis, including sore throat. Such inflammatory processes provoke loosening of the tonsils and the formation of irregularities. This, in turn, contributes to the accumulation of pathogenic microflora.
But, if you use the medication in question in the form of inhalations, fine particles penetrate even the most inaccessible places and destroy harmful bacteria.
In addition, the drug is used not only for inhalation. The product can be diluted with mineral water and rinsed the mouth. This method of treatment helps to destroy all microbes and promotes a speedy recovery.
Inhalations with Decasan: how to do and how to dilute?
Before inhaling Decasan through a nebulizer, you must carefully study the instructions that are in the package along with the drug. It provides complete information about the features and describes the method of application. Compliance with the instructions must be taken with full responsibility. Improper use of the medication can aggravate the course of the disease and lead to unpredictable consequences.
How to do inhalations with Decasan? It depends on the release form. The purchased drug in nebulas does not require additional manipulations or preparation of the solution. But the product in its pure form must be diluted before use.
The best way to prepare an inhalation solution is saline solution. The proportions vary depending on the age of the patient.
For an adult, the dosage is 1:1 (1 part of the medicine and the same part of saline). These are standard numbers for preparing the product. The final decision is made by the doctor, taking into account the characteristics of the disease and the patient’s condition.
Dekasan's instructions for the nebulizer provide for a daily procedure. The number of procedures may vary: from 1 to 3 per day. The dosage of the medication is 5-10 ml for one-time use.
Remember
Treatment should begin gradually. On the first day, one procedure is enough, after which the patient’s reaction is observed. In the absence of allergic manifestations, the number of manipulations is increased to three per day.
If the drug was used undiluted during the procedure, then afterward you may experience an unpleasant taste in the mouth, which is absolutely harmless. It can be easily eliminated by rinsing your mouth with a small amount of boiled water.
It is not recommended to eat or drink drinks for 20-30 minutes after the procedure.
The answer to the question of how many days you can do inhalations is ambiguous. The usual treatment course is from 5 to 12 days. If the patient does not experience significant improvements, the doctor should be informed to adjust further treatment.
More
Contraindications, use during pregnancy and lactation
Due to the fact that Decasan does not have any effect on human cells and does not accumulate in the blood, it is practically free of contraindications. The only exception is individual intolerance to the main active ingredient, which is most often manifested by burning, itching, hives and redness of the skin .
Before using Decasan to gargle, it would be wise to apply a few drops of the drug to the elbow bend - where the skin is thinnest and most sensitive. If no unpleasant symptoms appear within an hour, this will mean that there is no allergy.
During pregnancy and lactation, Decasan can be used in the usual manner: it does not penetrate the mucous membranes, does not enter the blood, does not accumulate and has no chance of having a harmful effect on the child.
It is also used freely in children, only in lower dosages than in adults..
One of the pleasant properties of Decasan is that it increases the sensitivity of pathogenic microorganisms to antibiotics. Therefore, its use in cases of viral nature of the disease is doubly justified.
